"Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators." ~ G.K. Chesterton

Look Inside the Book | Goodreads Reviews | Listen on Canon+

The book of Revelation was written to do just that: reveal. But most commentaries nowadays either engage in bizarre speculations about the future, or they keep an embarrassed distance from all the apocalyptic events that the apostle John says will “shortly take place.”

In this commentary, Douglas Wilson provides a passage-by-passage walkthrough of the entire book, showing how John’s most notorious prophecies concern the Fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Explaining symbols and characters as he goes, Wilson shows from the text that not only is this book not an elaborate code, but that Revelation is not even ultimately concerned with the end of the world as we know it. Revelation is about the triumph of the Church, which always happens when the Man comes around.

Customers praised this Revelation commentary for its clear, accessible verse-by-verse analysis from a postmillennial preterist perspective. Reviewers said it "increased my love for Christ" and was "easy to read and understand." Many noted it changed their eschatological views. One critic found it "matter-of-fact" for lacking diverse viewpoints.

Gave the book to a friend after reading it myself.

Here’s a quote (including typos and errors) from my good friend:

“ I am reading now, and I have begun to see a pattern totally different than I ever thought before. Like everyone thinks revelation is a book of doom and despair, it is so much more. It is actually adding to My hope. It changes ones prospective in a very good way. To me it also bridges the gap between God's eternal plan for us and Revelation. The book does fit in after all.”

So, it is an excellent read, well-written, wonderfully researched, etc. Pastor Wilson’s book, “When the Man Comes Around” increased my love for Christ, increased my understanding and changed my view on what is reality.

Perfect title for the commentary at hand.

Doug does a very good job explaining how he came to the understanding of text as he goes through the entire book line by line.

Good Title. Although I'm not sure exactly the meaning.

I like how it explained Revelations. I like how Doug put the book Revelations into its present moment of 66 to 70 AD and explained in great detail for contemporary reader what the end of the world meant to Jerusalem at that time. And I believe at the very end it showed that everything that has happened since is the long road the long meandering road of the church of Christ his bride walking down the bridle aisle.

Great Abbreviated Commentary: When the Man Comes Around

I love Pastor Wilson’s writing style. This is a great abbreviated commentary on John’s Revelation. My pastor is a pre-mil dispensationalist who is currently preaching through Revelation. 'When the Man Comes Around' also serves as my emotional support as I sit through my pastor’s sermons.

This book truly changed the way I viewed eschatology. Before I read this book I was pre- mill, now I am Post-mill. Doug has a way of discussing and explaining his view on things with humility and kindness. He is never arrogant and always very clear. Ten out of ten.

This book is a great clarification of what Revelation is all about. Straightforward, unapologetic, and even humble at times. I’m buying a bunch to give to friends in need.

Very Helpful

I'm only halfway through this commentary but have already enjoyed it immensely and have learned so much. I appreciate all the other scripture references that the author connects to the Revelation passages to give them context and "let scripture interpret scripture". Also the historical context is fascinating. I expected this book to help me understand the setting and imagery which it has, but the surprise has been how inspired I have been by understanding the meaning and imagery to be a more worshipful person.

Great resource!

Great resource for anyone looking for a thoughtful and thorough commentary on Revelation. The verse by verse analysis makes a great study guide as you read Revelation. Would love something like this for a couple more books of the Bible.

Revelation simply put

Doug does a fantastic job of framing the book or Revelation in a way that makes sense to a layman such as myself. The prophesy becomes clear and makes much more sense when the foundation is given from a preterist point of view. Doug drives his points home with clear, concise statements that are repeated for emphasis where needed. My viewpoint and “camp” on Revelation has changed in large part due to this book and how Doug unpacks the scripture verse by verse, giving his unique style of exposition on the matter. If you enjoy listening to Doug’s podcasts and sermons this book is right in the wheelhouse! I pray it helps simplify and glean fresh perspective on a book that mankind has grossly overcomplicated.

Eye Opener

It was nice to see the book of revelation broken down chapter by chapter. Growing up in the church I was shown certain scriptures from Revelation and how it always represented the current state of the world. I now see that Revelation has a lot of references from Ezekiel, Isaiah and John and clearly talks about the destruction of Jerusalem. Eschatology was always a topic in the church I grew up in, and it's something that I've been studying more lately. This is my first book that I've read since considering myself a reformed Christian, and I look forward to reading many more from Douglas Wilson.

Great Partial Preterist Commentary

I think this an excellent commentary from partial preterist perspective. Doug Wilson doesn't hesitate to interpret difficult symbols and imagery, and this helps makes sense of how this book would have been relevant to it's original audience. Perhaps we will all change our views "mid rapture", but I think this is a logical, biblically consistent view.

Finally, An Commentary That Laypersons Can Easily Understand

I've been pastoring for almost 15 years, and have always been wary of teaching through Revelation, because people had an unhealthy interest in using it like a "crystal ball" to identify who was the antichrist. I repented of avoiding the book and decided to teach through it. Grabbed this book to help me have some backup. Wilson does such a great job comparing Scripture with Scripture, bringing clarity to the text, keeping the glory of God and redemption of Christ central. This is the best book on revelation that even laypersons can read and enjoy

The Man done come around!

Doug Wilson’s “When the Man Comes Around” is an excellent commentary on the book of Revelation. Though the author goes verse-by-verse, the commentary is succinct and clear. You can buy 700-page commentaries on Revelation - or you can read Doug’s concise tome and gain a clearer understanding of John’s Revelation, which was “soon to happen.” I heartily commend “When the Man Comes Around” to anyone who would like to take a “fresh” (orthodox) view of the most disparately-viewed book in the New Testament. You will be challenged and blessed!

This book was the best and easiest to understand commentary on revelation and it highlights the partial preterist view very refreshing in this day of dispensation false doctrine

Extremely Helpful

Wilson's commentary is lucid and concise. The Dispensational understandings of Revelation that I was repeatedly presented with had always seemed confusing and inconsistent. Personally, I find Wilson's perspective far more harmonious with the entirety of Scripture.

Amazing contrast in the midst of other contemporary titles

This commentary is easy to follow along and has some great one liners (as Wilson is known for). This is a great change of tone even compared to some of his other colleagues. If you don’t have the time or capacity to read Gentry this is a good abstract into post-mil theology

First look at post-mill

Having grown up dispy-pre-m, but set that aside after several years of study, thought, and prayer, I have been curious to read a Revelation commentary from a post-mill perspective. I found DW to be more convincing regarding his preterist interpretive grid than his explanation of ch19-22. But it gave me grist for the mill (no pun intended) with DW's usual good humor and insight.

Best commentary title of all time

Doug Wilson provides solid exegesis from the postmill perspective on the book of Revelation. Easy to read but very informative!
