Rebekah Merkle has dabbled in a number of occupations ranging from running her own clothing label to designing fabrics to becoming a full-time high school humanities teacher (which is fitting, because she was a student in one of the founding classical Christian schools in the USA). Rebekah has written Eve in ExileClassical Me, Classical Theeand has edited the Brit Lit series for classical Christian schools. But by far her proudest accomplishment is her crew of five outrageous, hilarious, high-speed children, and her favorite role is that of wife to her similarly outrageous, hilarious, and high-speed husband Ben Merkle.

Do you want to cook for a large group of people but are overwhelmed by the prospect? Look no further! Make meals that are quick, classy, and easy to assemble.

Look inside the book

The need to feed a crowd is a fact of life for many Christian communities, but it doesn’t exist anywhere else in the American social scene. Google “feed a big group” and you’ll get cute entertainment magazines with suggestions for caviar and soufflés for six, or, on the other hand, a mass of gray casseroles requiring only hamburger, cream of mushroom, and crushed Fritos.

Where are the actually delicious recipes for an actually large group—whether for a regular Bible study or a home group or a school event—where you don’t have to multiply the recipe by 16?

That’s why Rebekah Merkle has put together these soup night recipes with the scaling, menu, tips, and taste-testing fine-tuned from years in her own home.

If you want to take hospitality seriously but aren’t sure how, this is the book for you. It’s packed with no-nonsense practical advice about grocery runs, best kitchen utensils, soup-night logistics, budget- and time-saving tips, and husband-approved soup recipes (with bread and cinnamon rolls to go with).

Soup Night Slapdashery provides the 16 recipes you need to start practicing hospitality for big crowds. (Yes, regular-batch-sized recipes are included as well.) The great news is this won’t take you a week of prep. With this handy cookbook, you can easily feed a crowd with just a few hours of work.

Customers said this cookbook makes "cooking for big crowds achievable" with practical recipes scaled for families and large groups. The spiral-bound design lays flat, and customers love the helpful hosting tips and "delicious" recipes. One noted concern about a delivery delay, but overall satisfaction is very high.

So many possibilities

One of the many great things about this cookbook (second to the introduction to the eat-cinnamon-rolls-with-chili concept) is how she goes through the practical steps of cooking a huge meal, which I’ve used to make other recipes. Plus, seeing the recipes laid out like this takes away the ACK! scariness out of attempting to feed this many people. Bekah, you bless us all.

Most Excellent

I must note that, as of this writing, I have only made 3 of the 8 soups in this book. However, all of them have turned out amazing and received much praise from family and friends. As someone new-ish to hosting larger groups of people, Rebekah Merkle's tips and tricks have been very helpful and the family sized recipes were a blessing. Especially the fact that they serve 8 instead of the typical 6! All in all, if you find yourself floundering when trying to figure out how to prepare food for more than 20 people (children included in that headcount) this little book is a great help and a joy to read.

LOVE IT!

This is such a fantastic cookbook! I love the hard cover with the ability to lay the book flat. I love that it’s small enough to pack up to the store with me. I love that it has the recipe for a large gathering or also just your own family. I also love the intro and the story behind soup night. So sweet. We’ve already started in on the recipes and... delish! Can’t say enough about this cookbook.

Recipes and Tips I Really Need!

This book is perfect for me! I’ve needed it for months as my family hosts a huge crowd for Community group for church. These recipes and serving tips are great. We are making our way through, trying out new recipes each week. I recommend the Tikka Masala.

Go forth and feed the people...YOU can do it!

As soon as I read the email announcing the book, I did a cursory glance at the recipes and bought it 2 seconds later. It is a brilliant idea! The mind numbing calculating and jiggering of recipes, hand wringing of what to do, questioning if I can do this for this size group are just about gone now. Unless Rebekah showed up and shaped the loaves, opened the cans, or dumped the Velveeta, it couldn't be easier. The kingdom is advanced and God is glorified as we sit, pray, and eat together. I aspire to a weekly gathering of some sort...this is the handbook to get that going. This is NOT your current dietary trend--kinda cookbook...this is in the trenches, feeding the heart and soul of weary people while gathered together to resist the evils of this age--kinda cookbook! I also appreciated the regular size recipes and its beauty. It is beautiful! There are a couple of omissions like temp for cooking the chicken in the oven and how long to simmer on the Green Chicken Chile recipe, maybe if we are following Rebekah's time it would go without saying. Anyway, if you've done any cooking at all you can figure it out. Minor details...major blessing. Thanks, Rebekah and Canon crew.

I like the book- I spent a little bit of time diving into the book. I love reading RM's comments and intros to each recipe. It helped me plan my first gathering of our community group. I realized I could make a big batch of a stew I make often. I actually was able to sit and figure out the amounts I'd need for that using the comparisons of recipes and explanations. I'm going to officially use one of the recipes at our November gathering. I enjoy the "real life" quality of this book. Kind of like having an experienced friend in your kitchen helping you to feel less intimidated.

This book was exactly what I was hoping for - making larger amounts of food for more than 8 people. I like that Rebekah also recalibrates all of the recipes for smaller amounts so I can try them out first. Real ingredients that are not difficult to find and gluten-free recipes are identified.
